In Turkey, near the village Derinkuyu, there is a large underground city. It is about 3000 years old, and still scientists do not know exactly who built it.
We found the cave quite by accident, when in 1963, one of the villagers started to repair his house, and after one of the walls has been broken, the man saw her room and passage leading to an underground labyrinth.
There is a great collection of some photos of this amazing city.
In the city, which situated at a depth of 80 meters can live up to 20 thousand people
There are all well designed ventilation shafts, residential quarters, stalls for animals, kitchens, wine cellars, barns, schools, shops, churches and cemeteries
There were even a winery with a wine press
Scientists believe that the city goes much deeper into the ground
Tourists can see only a small part of the city, where the mazes are not so tortuous. This is an essential decission for people’s safety
The entrances to the tunnels were overlapped with stone-wheels doors which defended the village from enemies
Even if the opponent has overcome them, he wouldn’t be able to get back to the surface without the knowledge of secret passages and labyrinths
Probably the last residents of the city were the early Christians, but this monumental city was built by another people
There were representatives of different cultures, they left the city, and were replaced by other nations. And it continued until the VIII century BC
And then more than for a thousand years the city was forgotten
