Amazing and overflowing with talent, Alan Rickman played some of the most famous movie villains of all time. In spite of this fact, his charm, wit and charisma made him the favorite actor of millions of people around the world. He was a real master of disguise and an utter delight to watch in every movie in which he starred.

Bright Side hopes you’ll remember and enjoy these wonderful roles played by one of the true geniuses of British cinema.

Die Hard

The international terrorist Hans Gruber was firmly fixed in various lists of the best movie villains of all time, even though it was Rickman’s debut. A famous scene of his first meeting with John McClane appeared in the movie script only when it was determined that Rickman could perfectly replicate an American accent. In this movie he demonstrates the talent in all its glory, using his unique skill of disguise to enliven Gruber.

Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves

At first, Rickman refused the role of the ominous Sheriff of Nottingham, but he agreed when the director promised him complete freedom in the character’s interpretation. The cruel and psychopathic villain performed by Rickman has become a real decoration of the movie and brought a BAFTA award to the actor.

Sense and Sensibility

Known mostly as a movie villain, Rickman appeared on the big screen in a new and unusual role in 1995. In this film adaptation, he played the sensual Colonel Brandon, who got into the world of intrigues and a love triangle.

Rasputin

In this movie Rickman affected us once again with his genius acting. An Englishman with a perfect pronunciation and impeccable manners, he managed somehow to understand the mysterious Russian soul. You can hardly recognize Rickman as a dark, mysterious and powerful man who literally broke into the closed world of the royal family.

Dogma

Rickman performed the part of Metatron, an angel looking like a rock star, with 99-pound wings, dark humor and a distinctive accent. Although Rickman didn’t have much screen time in the movie, every time he appeared was memorable.

Galaxy Quest

«I love challenges. They help the actor to perform the part better,» said Rickman. In «Galaxy Quest,» he had to wear an uncomfortable rubber wig during the entire filming process.

Love Actually

He proved his brilliance once again when he performed a role in the Christmas comedy «Love Actually.»

Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street

In a musical by the famous director Tim Burton, Rickman played the part of Judge Turpin — an antagonist to Johnny Depp’s lead role. The movie was duly appreciated and received 10 Tony awards and two Golden Globes.

Perfume: The Story of a Murderer

«His performance has always fascinated me. He brought to his hero’s character the only thing he really needed — an intelligence — because Rishi was the only person there smart enough to understand what kind of murders were there, and what a murderer was hunting for,» said Bernd Eichinger, the movie’s producer.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows — Part 2

Probably the most well-known Rickman role is when he played Severus Snape in the Harry Potter movies. Professor Snape is one of the most mysterious, complicated and worshipped characters in the series, and J.K. Rowling personally chose Rickman to perform the part and shared with him the most important information about the hero, which came out to the world only in the end of the series. In each of the eight movies, Rickman gave us a lot of memorable scenes, and certainly every fan has a favorite.

’When I’m 80 years old and sitting in my rocking chair, I’ll be reading Harry Potter. And my family will say to me, ’After all this time?’ And I will say, ’Always,’ the actor once said.

Next time we watch Harry Potter, we’ll smile in your honor, Mr. Rickman — a villain with a heart of gold.
