preview-650x390-650-1449561106[1]We know Jim Carrey as one of the greatest comedians of modern times, and the films he’s starred in always manage to lift up our spirits.

But after reading this eloquent speech from Jim, which he gave at Maharishi University Of Management and which he addressed to all people around the world, we’re convinced that he’s also an incredibly wise man. Take a look.

’…My soul is not contained within the limits of my body. My body is contained within the limitlessness of my soul. I’ve often said that I wished people could realize all their dreams of wealth and fame so they could see that it’s not where you’ll find your sense of completion. I can tell you from experience, the effect you have on others is the most valuable currency there is. Everything you gain in life will rot and fall apart, and all that will be left of you is what was in your heart.

How will you serve the world? What do they need that your talent can provide? That’s all you have to figure out… You can join the game, fight the wars, play with form all you want, but to find real peace, you have to let the armour fall.

My father could have been a great comedian, but he didn’t believe that was possible for him, and so he made a conservative choice. Instead, he got a safe job as an accountant, and when I was 12 years old, he was let go from that safe job and our family had to do whatever we could to survive. I learned many great lessons from my father, not the least of which was that you can fail at what you don’t want, so you might as well take a chance on doing what you love.

Many of us want to make a positive contribution to the world, but we don’t know how or where we can start doing this. We dedicate our entire lives to school, then to work. Later, many of us begin to realise that we’ve completely forgotten about the yearnings of our heart and the things that fill us with joy. On top of this, we are constantly told by others what we need to do, who we need to be, and what is fundamentally «good». In following our daily routines, we’ve totally neglected the needs of our souls, our own interests, and eventually many of us feel low and are constantly depressed. We are frustrated because nobody taught us to follow our impulses and take that chance; all we’ve been taught is that in this world, we have to play according to certain rules.

You shouldn’t be afraid of anything. Fear is inevitably going to be a player in your life, but you get to decide how much. You can spend your whole life imagining ghosts around you, worrying about your pathway to the future, but all there will ever be is what’s happening here, and the decisions we make in this moment, which are based on either love, or fear. Our life is very short, so don’t be afraid to move beyond the routine and take those risks. Don’t think about the final result, follow your heart and enjoy your journey. You can always make a step towards your dream, whether it’s a small or a great one.
