A UFO was spotted hovering over a sweltering city – but it turned out to be just a cloud.

Alien-spotters headed online after seeing what looked like a flying saucer towering over Dublin, Ireland on Tuesday morning.

But true believers were left disappointed after it turned out to be an extra-terrestrial-shaped cloud.

Student Carla Whelan, 18, posted shots of the martian cloud, which is a lenticular cloud, according to the Met Office, and not the sign of an impending invasion.

The clouds form after rushing, moist hair runs straight into a mountain and is forced upwards before condensing on the downward slope.

Carla said: “I first saw the cloud at about five to 11 this morning and it was smaller at first and got bigger as the morning went on.

“I initially thought it looked like a tornado but then I realised it looked more like aliens are coming.”

Sean Connolly said: “There’s a cloud floating around Dublin this morning and it’s totally a UFO. It can’t fool me.”

Colly Murray added: “Strange looking cloud about Dublin this morning #ufo.

“Thought it looked a bit space ship like alright but I was more taken with the texture – it looked like candy floss.

“It changed really quickly, in terms of its structure too.”

The sun-baked Irish capital is currently enjoying the heatwave that has also seen temperatures soaring in the UK with highs of 23 degrees Celsius forecasted for Dublin on Tuesday.
